Sydney Sweeney Christy Martin Boxing – Film Inspires Women

Sydney Sweeney’s rise in Hollywood has been unstoppable, but her latest role may be her boldest yet. In Christy, Sweeney steps into the gloves of Christy Martin, the most famous female boxer of the 1990s and a true pioneer of the sport. The film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025 earned a standing ovation and has already fuelled early Oscar buzz. But beyond the red carpet, Sweeney’s journey into boxing training offers powerful lessons for women everywhere.

Sydney Sweeney’s Boxing Training Programme

To portray Martin authentically, Sweeney dedicated months to intensive training. She revealed her routine in interviews:

  • Morning: 1 hour of heavy weight training, focusing on compound lifts for explosive punching power
  • Midday: 2 hours of kickboxing and boxing drills — padwork, footwork, bag rounds, and sparring drills
  • Evening: 1 hour of additional strength and conditioning to build durability and physique

This was six days a week, with recovery protocols on the seventh. Sweeney described the intensity:

“I trained three and a half months before filming — weights in the morning, fight training in the afternoon, weights again at night. It was the hardest I’ve ever pushed myself.”  Sydney Sweeney

She insisted on performing her own fight scenes — taking real punches, enduring bruises, and icing down between takes. This raw approach has been widely praised for bringing gritty authenticity to the screen.

The Nutrition Behind the Transformation

Unlike most actors who aim to slim down, Sweeney needed to gain nearly 30 pounds to match Martin’s physicality. Her diet included calorie-dense meals, protein shakes, and comfort foods:

“I ate a lot of Chick-fil-A, a lot of milkshakes — basically anything to fuel the training and add weight.”  Sydney Sweeney

If you want to see how proper fuelling works for training — whether it’s fight prep, fat loss, or performance — read my full guide on Nutrition for Boxers. It breaks down clean eating, fight-camp fuelling, and recovery meals you can use straight away.

This combination of eating more and training hard created a strong, athletic frame while still retaining speed and agility — proof that women can embrace strength without fear of “bulking up.”

About the Film – The Christy Martin Story

Christy tells the story of Christy Martin, who broke barriers in the 1990s as the first female boxer promoted by Don King and featured on a major Mike Tyson undercard. Known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Martin was a world champion and cultural icon at a time when women’s boxing struggled for recognition.

The film doesn’t shy away from her personal struggles either — including surviving domestic abuse and a near-fatal attack in 2010. Today, Martin is a motivational speaker and advocate, proving resilience inside and outside the ring. Sydney Sweeney and Christy Martin both shine — one through the story itself, the other through her dedication to the role.

Sweeney said at TIFF:

“Christy’s story is about more than boxing. It’s about courage, survival, and proving people wrong. That’s what drew me to her.”  Sydney Sweeney (TIFF)

Why Boxing Empowers Women in 2025

Sweeney’s dedication highlights what women discover in boxing every day. As a coach in London, I see these benefits constantly:

  • Strength & Tone: Boxing combines cardio with resistance for a lean, strong physique
  • Confidence: Learning to throw combinations builds self-belief inside and outside the gym
  • Mental health: Hitting pads is a powerful release for stress and anxiety
  • Resilience: Boxing develops mental toughness that carries into daily life
