Cool Your Palms, Boost Your Punch: How Targeted Cooling For Fitness Supercharges Boxing Performance by 600%!
Boxing PT London
Ever feel like you’re giving 100% in a boxing workout, but your body forces you to slow down? The culprit is often overheating. According to Stanford neurobiologist Dr. Andrew Huberman, cooling specific parts of your body can dramatically enhance endurance, strength, and recovery. Be prepared to get WOWED!
In a recent Huberman Lab episode on thermoregulation, he explains how cooling the palms, soles of the feet, and face—known as glabrous skin—can unlock 200–600% more work capacity and speed up post-exercise recovery. With the right cooling techniques, you could throw 2x, 3x, or even 6x more punches in training and bounce back quicker between rounds.
The Science of Thermoregulation & Glabrous Skin Cooling
When you train, your body heats up—like an engine. Thermoregulation is how your body manages this heat. If your core temperature gets too high, your performance drops. Research shows a key muscle enzyme responsible for energy output shuts down around 40°C (104°F) to protect your muscles. Overheating literally limits your power.
But you don’t need an ice bath to cool down effectively. Your palms, soles, and face are packed with special blood vessels called arteriovenous anastomoses (AVAs), which rapidly release heat. Cooling just these areas can drop your core temperature faster than full-body immersion.
Stanford scientists developed a “cooling glove” that pulls heat from the palms. The results were astonishing: a test subject improved from 180 pull-ups to over 620 pull-ups in six weeks, purely from palm cooling between sets. That kind of improvement led researchers to call it “better than steroids”—without the side effects.
Boxing in the Heat: Why Cooling Matters
Boxing-based workouts are intense. Whether you’re smashing pad combos or grinding through conditioning drills, your body heats up fast. Outdoors in the London summer—or even indoors with heavy rounds—overheating can hit hard.
That’s where smart cooling comes in. By using targeted cooling techniques, we can keep your core temperature lower, allowing you to punch harder, train longer, and recover faster.
During our mobile 1-on-1 sessions, I integrate cooling strategies between rounds or drills so your energy and sharpness stay high. You’ll be surprised how much more power and precision you’ll have when overheating isn’t holding you back. Check our website here: Boxing Trainer London
Targeted Cooling for Fitness: Hacks for Boxing Sessions
You don’t need fancy gear to stay cool. Here are science-backed, easy-to-use methods we apply during training:
Before Training: Start cool. Splash cold water on your face or palms, or hold a chilled bottle before we begin. This lowers your starting core temperature and delays overheating.
During Rounds: In between high-intensity rounds, hold an icy water bottle or cool towel in your palms or on your face. This quickly reduces heat in the body’s best cooling zones.
Active Recovery: We can include light movement (e.g., footwork drills) while holding a cool object to combine recovery and cooling.
Post-Session: After training, skip the ice bath. Instead, cool your palms and face gently for 5–10 minutes. This helps bring your body back to normal temperature without interfering with muscle recovery.
These strategies are inspired by Dr. Huberman’s insights and studies from Stanford University, which show how effective glabrous skin cooling is for boosting performance and recovery.

FAQs – Boxing & Targeted Cooling For Fitness
What is glabrous skin cooling and why does it help in boxing? Glabrous skin cooling targets the areas of your body (palms, soles, face) that are best at releasing heat. Cooling these zones helps regulate your temperature, which means you can train longer, recover faster, and perform better—especially during intense boxing workouts.
Do I need specialist gear to cool effectively? No. A bottle of cold water, a chilled towel, or a bowl of cool water can work just fine. The key is using them on the right areas at the right time—like between rounds or at the end of a session.
Is it safe to train outdoors in the summer? Yes—with proper planning. I adjust the timing and intensity of sessions, seek shaded areas, and use cooling techniques to keep you safe and performing well even on warmer days.
Do you train complete beginners? Absolutely. Most of my clients are either new to boxing or returning to fitness. I build your skill and confidence step by step. No pressure, no intimidation—just proper coaching.
What areas of London do you cover? I train clients across Central, North, South, East, and West London. Whether you’re near Holborn, Hampstead, Clapham, Shoreditch, or Canary Wharf—I’ll bring the session to you.
